One of the primary objectives behind the US confrontation with Iran was to halt Tehran's nuclear program and secure an agreement regarding it. However, US President Donald Trump now appears compelled to move away from that goal. It has been reported that the Trump administration has expressed interest in ending hostilities with Iran without a nuclear deal. However, in exchange, Tehran would have to open up the strategically vital Strait of Hormuz. *The Wall Street Journal* published a report on this matter on Sunday .

It states that Trump has been seeking such a potential solution for several weeks. He has privately indicat ed to close aides that he could avoid war even without a new nuclear deal with Iran. In this scenario, fully normalizing commercial shipping in the Strait of Hormuz could serve as the primary condition for averting war and extending the current de-escalation. However, Iran is not willing to reopen the strait unconditionally either. Tehran has laid down several conditions for reopening the Strait of Hormuz; these include compensation amounting to billions of dollars, an end to the US naval blockade, the withdrawal of US forces from the region, and the release of frozen Iranian assets. However, Washington did not accept these restrictions imposed by Iran. The United States also rejected Iran's attempt to levy tolls for the use of the strait at that time.Meanwhile, Trump has claimed several times recently that the Strait of Hormuz has already fully reopened. However, the conflict has had a significant impact on the US energy market; gasoline prices in the country remain considerably higher than they were before the conflict began.Meanwhile, the US midterm elections are approaching. Consequently, political pressure is mounting on Trump to demonstrate to American voters what has been achieved through military operations. Against this backdrop, the Trump administration views the full restoration of operations in the Strait of Hormuz as a promising opportunity to disengage from the conflict. It is along these lines that the President may be considering dropping the demand for a new nuclear deal with Iran.
